The Master’s programme in Ecology is designed to train specialists for work in the fields of applied ecology and environmental management. It combines fundamental academic training with practical approaches to contemporary issues in the protection and rational use of natural resources, with a special focus on solving problems aimed at biodiversity conservation.

The main educational Master’s programme «Ecology. Biodiversity and Nature Conservation» at St. Petersburg State University (SPbU) is the only educational programme in Russia that studies biodiversity conservation issues in conjunction with the assessment of ecosystem services – that is, the benefits that humanity derives from the functioning of natural ecosystems. Such assessment is crucial for addressing numerous issues in various areas of economic activity, including the establishment of specially protected natural areas.

Students receive thorough theoretical training and carry out scientific research work analyzing biodiversity at different levels of organization and studying the functional diversity of ecosystems, including anthropogenic ecosystems and agroecosystems. They become familiar with a wide range of applied challenges in the field of ecology and environmental protection and acquire practical skills to address them.

Students have access to unique opportunities for field research, state-of-the-art equipment at the SPbU Science Park, and the university’s extensive information resources.
